What freeze-thaw cycling does to a roof

Water expands when it freezes. That single fact is what makes a Canadian winter so hard on a roof.

Through a GTA winter, the temperature crosses the freezing point again and again, and on a Toronto roof that can mean sixty or more freeze-thaw cycles in a single winter. The cold does two things at once. It stresses the shingle itself: the repeated thermal shock works the sealant strip that bonds each shingle to the one below until that bond starts to let go, and asphalt grows brittle in the cold, so the mat is more likely to crack. And it weaponizes water: once a lap has lifted or a seam has opened, capillary action draws meltwater up under the shingle, where it freezes overnight, expands, pushes the gap a fraction wider, then melts and is drawn a little deeper before the next freeze does it again. A bond that was sound in December has let go in three places by March. The roof is not aging on a calendar; it is aging on a counter that ticks every time the weather crosses zero.

This is why the identical shingle lasts longer in a mild climate than it does here, and why “it was fine last winter” is not evidence that it is fine now. The damage is cumulative. It does not announce itself in one storm; it accrues across every winter until one spring the roof has visibly given up.

What causes ice dams: a warm attic, meltwater, and where leaks start

An ice dam is freeze-thaw concentrated at the worst possible place: the edge of your roof.

It forms when heat escaping from the house warms the upper part of the roof enough to melt the snow sitting on it. That meltwater runs down toward the eaves, which are colder because they overhang the unheated exterior wall, and there it refreezes into a ridge of ice. The ridge grows, and the next round of meltwater backs up behind it, pooling under the shingles, where it has all the time it needs to find a seam, a nail, or a gap and run into the house. The leak shows up on a bedroom ceiling, and the homeowner blames the roof, when the actual cause was a warm attic.

That last point is the one the gutter-cleaning advice misses. Ice dams are not caused by your eavestroughs, and they are not cured by knocking icicles down. None of that means you should ignore an active leak.
